What Is Ductless Air Conditioning?

Ductless air conditioning is an increasingly popular alternative to central HVAC systems, especially in situations where buildings don’t have existing ductwork. Whether you’re installing air conditioning in an older home with baseboard heating or in a converted living space such as a barn or guest house, ductless heating and air conditioning can be a cost-effective choice with a wide range of benefits including:

  • Less expensive and time-consuming installation
  • Energy-efficient individual zone cooling
  • Compact size and custom-positioned units
  • Reduced energy loss compared to when air travels through ductwork

How Ductless HVAC Systems Work

A ductless air conditioning installation typically consists of two primary components. The first is a compressor unit that is installed outside the residence, commercial property or public institution. The second is the indoor ductless heating and cooling unit installed directly into a wall in the home. Ductless HVAC systems typically feature multiple, individually controlled interior units situated in designated zones, separate rooms, or individual apartments or offices.

The outdoor compressor is connected to the interior ductless air conditioning units by a special conduit installed in the wall. The refrigerant line runs directly from the inside unit, through the wall and directly to the compressor. At the same time, the outdoor compressor serves as the power source for the indoor units through the same, single connection.

Once the ductless air conditioning installation is completed, the system is fully operational. Similar to a central air conditioner, the ductless air conditioning compressor cools and pumps air through the line and into the system. Then, a fan inside the unit blows the cool air out into the room. Meanwhile, warm air circulates up and into the wall-installed unit and is filtered out with any built-up condensation.
